Planning the night
A Marrakech evening around the show
Jemaa el-Fnaa at dusk, the Koutoubia minaret and the old gardens: how to plan the hours around a Marrakech dinner show without overfilling the night.
Reserve your night at Nouba ↗Start with the fixed point
A dinner show is the one part of the evening with a fixed time: your confirmation shows the time of your service. Build the rest around it, and keep the day before it light. The restaurant is on Boulevard Mohamed VI, in the Agdal zone, a road address you reach by taxi. That makes the show easier to plan than a medina restaurant, because you can set a leave-by time from your hotel and keep to it.
Jemaa el-Fnaa at dusk
Wikipedia describes the square's evening rhythm: snake charmers by day, then dancing boys, storytellers, magicians and peddlers later in the day, and as darkness falls dozens of food stalls, with the number of people peaking. It is the best-known free evening show in the city. Go on a night when you have no table booked, or in the late afternoon, and treat it as a separate outing from the dinner, not a warm-up squeezed in before your service.
The Koutoubia minaret
The Koutoubia minaret is Marrakech's landmark. Wikipedia gives its height as 77 metres and dates the present mosque to between 1158 and 1195, in the Almohad period. You can see it above the square and over the rooftops, and a short walk or taxi ride from Jemaa el-Fnaa puts you beside it. It is an active mosque, so plan to admire the minaret from outside.
The Agdal Gardens by day
Agdal is also the name of a large historic garden. According to Wikipedia the Agdal Gardens lie south of the old kasbah and royal palace, contain several historic water reservoirs and pavilions, and were listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1985, together with the medina and the Menara Gardens. A daytime visit pairs naturally with an evening in the Agdal zone, but check the opening arrangements before you go.
Eating before and after
The ticket is a dinner, so do not eat a large meal beforehand. If you want a snack, keep it light. Afterwards, the night can go on. Wikipedia notes the evening street food around Jemaa el-Fnaa, and says Avenue Mohammed VI contains what is claimed to be Africa's largest nightclub. Whether you carry on or go to bed is yours to decide, and the taxi ride home is the point to settle first.
Getting around between stops
The Moroccan National Tourist Office says taking a cab is very common inside Marrakech and that taxis are identified by colour for each city. Use the same approach for every leg of the night: ask for the meter or agree the fare first, and give a landmark or the name and street of your destination. A taxi from the old city to Boulevard Mohamed VI is simple to arrange, but build in a margin so you reach the restaurant for your service on time.
A sample shape for the night
Spend the afternoon in the old city, change at your hotel, then take a taxi out to Agdal for your service, leaving the end of the night open. Eat lightly at lunch, drink water through the afternoon, carry a layer and keep your phone charged for the ticket and the taxi. That shape keeps the dress code easy, the taxi simple and the show central. If you want the square too, give it its own evening. The booking calendar lists the services open on each date, and a free cancellation window lets you hold a date while you plan.
